Harmonious Reality

Hidden under the metropolitan buildings of Hong Kong lay religious Taoist temples, serving as a second home for those who pray to find success, happiness, health and much more. Taoism, or colloquially known as Daosim, is a prominent philosophical or religious tradition of Chinese folklore.

The Taoist temples in this photographic series include, but are not limited to, Tin Hau Temple Complex, Ching Chung Koon, Shang Sin Chun Tong, and Man Mo temple, varying in locations through the city of Hong Kong. Despite their different locations, environmental similarities emerge in the eyes of locals and tourists through unifying colors, distinct religious figures, and a team of people who make the magic happen by maintaining these spaces intact.

Starting 2,000 years ago, Taoism is approached in different manners by different sects. In this belief system, one strives to find the path of virtue and the method this is accomplished by varies. There is no one religious figure everyone answers to, rather a lifestyle that is adapted. Balance, stillness, and being in the present moment is greatly valued in the community; which is reflected within the temple’s symmetrical architecture. From ceilings to windows, details surrounding the space make it a welcoming environment for a time of tranquility.

Approaching the temple’s altar, offerings of goods such as fruits and burning incense are offered to the gods or higher power. Much like incense transforms as it burns, Taoism helps people transform and have hope in their daily lives through a calm and peaceful environment.

As these houses of worship may seem like the perfect place to breathe, there are some people that must work for others to have this luxury. It is the unseen aspects of these spaces create such beautiful conditions to experience. Painting, cleaning, and selling prayers is what the temple workers do to ensure the public encounters the harmonious atmosphere needed for their spiritual enlightenment. Through the combination of metaphysical elements and practical realities, Taoist temples shine in the city of Hong Kong through its unity and serenity.
